C
If you choose “C.” you’d be right. It’s a termite.
A is a weevil
Although they once ate a big proportion of our grain crops held in silos, they don’t cost us as much as termites.
B is a mosquito
They potentially could cost lives and one life is an immeasurable cost.
There is a lot of money spent on mosquito control by councils and shires doing stuff to reduce breeding, plus quarantine and health departments are trying to keep out zika and other viruses, but again, not as much as the treatment and the repair bills to actual damage caused by termites which is around $1.5 billion per year.
C is a termite
The thing about termites is that apart from Tasmania, the major termites threaten homes over the whole of Australia. In cities, suburbs and rural areas, homes are at risk.
The most significant reason is that most — meaning 60%-70% — of homeowners do nothing about stopping them.
Those that do something, are paying a professional about $1000 a year to check termite monitors and do an annual termite inspection. This is good value and certainly reduces the risk of costly attack. That $1000 pa is after the initial cost of the installation of their termite monitors… around $2000 – $3000. Even then, that’s a lot cheaper and much less traumatic than $Thousands for a termite treatment to control the colony and who knows how many $Thousands for repairs?
Monitoring and treating your termite infestation yourself is easy
I designed a TermiTrap which does the same termite monitoring job as the professional models but it doesn’t have to be dug into the soil (in fact it works better because being placed above ground level, it is able to be checked with a glance at the signal hole as you walk past (no tools) and they only cost you $475 for 22 of them. You can ‘install’ them in 15 minutes and they will last in Aussie sun and rain for a guaranteed 10 years. You can take them with you if you move house.
And, if you do discover termites in a termitrap — or in a fence or other structure, we sell an approved Colony Killer Termite Bait of the same formulation the professionals use. A carton costs $260 and is usually enough to kill a big termite colony or a couple of smaller ones. We’ve been doing this since 2002 and sold to thousands of homeowners all around Australia (except Tassie).
If you buy a kit (termite baiting system) the price reduces too but if you don’t need the termite bait right now there’s no need to order it.
