Mastos or “Mastotermes” are the termite kings
Clocking in at 13 to 15 mm, which is more than half an inch, significantly longer than the 5-7 mm of other termites you are likely to find.
In Australia, Mastos generally live north of the Tropic of Capricorn, from Rockhampton to Carnarvon.
There have been confirmed colonies found as far south as the Gold Coast, probably transported in potted plants.
Although a much cooler climate than the far north, they could become established although the development of their nests and chewing speed will be slower.
Termite control is critical with Mastos because their larger size accelerates the speed and level of destruction.
Mastos like termite monitors…
Mastos love the timber inside TermiTrap monitors but unfortunately, the colony killer termite bait containing chlorfluazuron will not kill them.
Mastos Require Professional Termite Control
The professional pest controllers will help you identify the pest… termites or white ants.
You need to call a professional termite control service when you find Mastos.
The professional may use a chemical containing fipronil which is transferable back to the nest but kills with a different mode of action. This is the same chemical used in Frontline applied directly onto the skin of dogs to kill fleas so it is not highly toxic when diluted and used around your home.
