Many people think ‘mud-brick’ houses provide an indefensible haven for termites.
However, termites seem to be able to find their way into any form and design of construction. It happens around 140,000 times a year in Australia.
Rammed earth brick houses are usually separated from the termites in the soil by a concrete slab floor. As long as the drainage and utilities entry points are protected by metal and/or particulate materials such as Granitgard, or Termi-Glass and, if the edges of the slab remain visible so it is easy to inspect and tell if termites have tunnelled up from the soil, the ‘mud bricks’ walls are no worse than other walls.
Just as in conventional buildings, there are often access points near steps and doorways and the junction between patios and the building proper.
This is exactly why it pays to inspect your home at least twice a year and surround it with TermiTraps as the first line of defence.
Here’s the Termite Defence Plan for All Homes:
- To begin, check there is no current termite attack in the building
- Surround your home with TermiteTraps or other monitors which give any scouting termites something easy to find and check on the Traps at least quarterly.
- Check the building once, preferably twice a year — just in case.
That’s the Prevention Plan – The Remedial Plan Goes Like This:
- If you find termites busy inside timbers of your structures or inside a TermiTrap, treat them gently so they will keep on feeding — then supply them with Colony Killer Termite Bait so they can take it (instead of timber) back to their nest and self destruct.
- Reset the trap/repair the damage.
