Although termites resemble ants in size…
And there are lots of them when you see them, the two are not related and in fact, are deadly enemies.
Some homeowners have tried to use this enmity to advantage and put up with ants in their kitchens or gardens in the hope of keeping termites away.
The theory never plays out – it’s a myth.
Termites have developed ways to thrive even in close proximity to predators like ants (and humans!) You control termites by killing them at their source, not by hiring their enemies as henchmen.
Soldier Termites Just Live in Readiness to Fight Ants
Soldier termites are designed to fight invaders such as ants. The soldier’s larger head and black mandibles serve as weapons to fend off ants attacking through a breach in a mud tunnel or piece of timber they are eating. Many soldiers also use chemical warfare, disgorging a milky substance from their heads that repels ants.
Mud Tunnels Protect Termites from Ants and Other Predators
Termites mud tunnels are impervious to penetration by ants unless they are broken open by a larger physical force such as a human, a falling branch, an itchy cow, etc. These narrow tubes resist high winds and storms!
Putting Up With Ants is Futile
Ants in the kitchen or all through the garden and lawn are not going to prevent termites from destroying your home. They are not your friend!
