Well Christine, the Traps are not childproof. And anyway, the bait is added to the outside of the Trap once termites have attacked. The bait is the consistency of mashed potato or cold porridge and nowhere near as much flavour, however you are not joking in your concern so to the facts: it is not at all toxic when eaten by mammals or birds. The Insect growth regulator which is the chemical chlorfluazuron, prevents or inhibits the insect production of chitin by interfering with an enzyme in the insect. Humans do not produce a chitin-strengthened outer shell so we are safe.
As i said, you do not add the bait until termites have attacked and then you need to have them feed undisturbed for weeks until sufficient has been transferred back to kill off the colony. If you can’t keep a young child away or just wish to make sure you can finish the baiting in order to defend your home, you may be able to place a large upturned plant pot over the Trap.
